TABC Secretary Rick Jelfs met with MP Vancouver-Granville Taleeb Noormohamed about Transport Action’s letter to federal Minister of Transport Transportation on the need for significant capital improvements to the rail corridor north of U.S border to allow Amtrak expansion and improve rail safety.
The letter’s two main issues highlighted:
- Changes necessary to allow improved Amtrak service during the FIFA World Cup as Amtrak is considering a 3rd train.
- Safety, environmental, and operational issues around the Semiahmoo Peninsula.
The meeting was brief, but Mr. Noormohamed seemed well informed on these issues and has been in contact with B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and fellow Liberal, MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells Ken Hardie.
The meeting also touched on high-speed rail wondering how it
would be routed north of the border given the level of development, an issue not as critical
south of the border.
Mr. Noormohamed noted that he was an enthusiastic train rider when attending university in the U.S.. The meeting was held on October 15, 2024.
