Ways forward from CN’s BC Rail abandonment plans

Canadian National has placed the former BC Rail line from Squamish to Exeter (100 Mile House) on its list of lines proposed for discontinuance. This could lead to abandonment and loss of the line as a rail corridor.

Citizen advocates, MLAs, MPs, First Nations, Regional Districts, and Municipalities have all expressed concern about the possible loss of a valuable piece of transportation infrastructure. The provincial government has yet to state its intentions for the line.

Transport Action BC has written to many of the organisations in the affected area detailing some ideas for consideration on potential ways forward to keep the line as a rail corridor.

Suggestions include a Foundation, similar to the Island Corridor Foundation or a return to provincial control but managed and operated by an independent commission similar to Ontario Northland.

The letter follows.
